Take Scott Kluth who founded CouponCabin.com, based in Hoffman Estates, in 2002 at the age of 24. He started the business on his laptop computer, spending about $30 a month to keep the site live, and by e-mailing merchants to negotiate discounts instead of traveling to meet them in person, he said.

Kluth couldn't have self-financed the company if it required more overhead, he said.

CouponCabin, which gets a commission from merchants when users redeem coupons obtained through the site, now generates more than $60 million in revenue a year for its 824 participating merchants, Kluth said. What's more, the site is attracting 1.2 million unique visitors a month, and triple that volume during the peak year-end holiday season, he said.
