Big-headed guy gets big idea for sunglasses

For people without fat heads, Rico Elmore's business venture may seem a bit bone-headed. But for those with plumper noggins, the idea is genius.

Indianapolis-based Fatheadz Sunglasses has hit on a niche — selling shades for big heads that just can't wear an average pair of glasses.

"After we got going with this, we suddenly found out that everybody knows somebody who has a fat head — somebody who needs this product," said CEO Elmore, 32.

Teenage owners of myyearbook.com

MyYearbook is the brainchild of David and Catherine Cook, both students at Montgomery High School in Skillman. The idea came to David, a MySpace user, while looking at a yearbook.

“I was just kind of flipping through a yearbook,” said 17-year-old David. He thought, “That would be a cool idea if we could do that online.”

Catherine liked the idea. Geoff immediately put $250,000 into the venture. Geoff, a Harvard economics major and already a business veteran at 27, had the technical know-how to get the site up and running in April 2005.

One of these millionaires still leaves with his parents

Barely 30 when they made their first million, this elite group is growing.

Envy them, hate them, love them – but one thing you can never do is accuse them of being born with a silver spoon. They made it all on their own.

No inheritance, no lottery wins, no Uncle Trump.

Internet richies

Take Scott Kluth who founded CouponCabin.com, based in Hoffman Estates, in 2002 at the age of 24. He started the business on his laptop computer, spending about $30 a month to keep the site live, and by e-mailing merchants to negotiate discounts instead of traveling to meet them in person, he said.

Kluth couldn't have self-financed the company if it required more overhead, he said.

CouponCabin, which gets a commission from merchants when users redeem coupons obtained through the site, now generates more than $60 million in revenue a year for its 824 participating merchants, Kluth said. What's more, the site is attracting 1.2 million unique visitors a month, and triple that volume during the peak year-end holiday season, he said.
